VE Day 80 celebrated in style at Cardiff care home

A Cardiff care home proudly welcomed the community to join residents and their relatives for a joyful and nostalgic celebration marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Care UK’s Llys Cyncoed, on Cyncoed Road, pulled out all the stops to commemorate the poignant anniversary of Victory in Europe, and hosted a 1940s-themed street party with delicious food, entertainment and dancing as they embraced the spirit of the 1940s.

Guests also enjoyed live entertainment from a fantastic brass band, which got everyone’s toes tapping.

Resident Pat Chesney, aged 85, reflected on her memories of the important time, saying: “It is essential to remember the war year and all the struggle. However the community spirit was never in doubt and everyone knew each other and helped each other, and that is a lesson to teach younger generations.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the celebration at Llys Cyncoed with the brass band, singing, dancing and the wonderful afternoon tea.”

Carley Hunt, General Manager at Llys Cyncoed, said: “We had a wonderful time celebrating VE Day 80 with residents, their families and the Cardiff community. Everyone was in high spirits as we marked this momentous occasion, but we also took time to reflect on the poignancy of the milestone.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came along, as well as the entire team for making this celebration possible.

“It was a privilege to honour this important anniversary and to see the residents enjoying the brass band performance, delicious food and company of the community as they shared their memories of times gone by. It’s so important to enable residents to foster meaningful connections with the local community and for us to host nostalgic events that can prompt reminiscence, so our VE Day celebration was a roaring success.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Llys Cyncoed provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care, and incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies. The home has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
