Tributes Pour In as Caerphilly MS Hefin David Dies Suddenly

Caerphilly, 13 August 2025 – The Welsh political landscape has been struck by tragedy today with the sudden death of Hefin David MS, the dedicated Labour representative for Caerphilly. Just one day before his 48th birthday, his passing prompted an outpouring of grief from across the political spectrum and beyond.

A Life of Service and Community Spirit

Hefin David, born on 13 August 1977 in Caerphilly, devoted his life to public service. His political career began in 2007 when he was elected to Caerphilly County Borough Council during a by-election for the St Cattwg ward. In 2016, he progressed to the Senedd, succeeding Jeff Cuthbert as the Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly, a role he held until his untimely death on 12 August 2025.

Beyond politics, Hefin was a respected academic. He served as a senior lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University, specialising in human resource management and professional practice.

Tragic Passing and Immediate Response

Gwent Police confirmed that officers were called to a property in Nelson, Caerphilly, just before 7 pm on Tuesday, 12 August, to respond to a medical emergency. A 47-year-old man was found unresponsive and pronounced dead by paramedics. Police state that the circumstances are not being treated as suspicious.

Leaders Reflect on a Life Well Lived

First Minister and Welsh Labour leader Eluned Morgan described the news as “extremely saddening,” praising David’s warmth, passion, and unwavering dedication to Caerphilly residents. She highlighted his effectiveness as a communicator and his pride in serving his community.

Gwent Police Chief Constable Mark Hobrough added: “A dedicated public servant to Caerphilly, his commitment to our communities will be a significant loss.” He recalled David as “an engaging and thoughtful individual” with whom he had worked closely.

Cross-Party Condolences and Reflections

Tributes flowed from across the political divide for an MS who was respected and liked on all sides of the chamber and who had a strong reputation for putting his constituents first.

Former Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies called the news “heartbreaking and tragic,” expressing that David had so much more to give to both Wales and his local community. Plaid Cymru MS Delyth Jewell noted his steadfast principles and willingness to collaborate across party lines, lamenting the loss of a deeply missed colleague.

At the national level, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer offered his tribute, calling Hefin David “a powerful voice for the people of Wales and a committed public servant,” reflecting that “the entire Labour movement will join me in grieving the loss of Hefin David.”

Legacy and Next Steps

David was known for his advocacy on employment, educational access for those with additional learning needs, and the development of Valleys communities. He also advanced work on small firms growth and championed support for families affected by autism.

His passing triggers a by-election for the Caerphilly MS seat, expected to be held later in 2025.

Hefin David’s sudden death is a stark reminder of life’s fragility. As tributes continue to come in and the community mourns, his legacy of compassion, dedication, and public service remains.
