Active travel improvements made in North Cornelly and Porthcawl

Two new toucan crossings have recently been installed in North Cornelly following funding from the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Scheme.

Previously, Bridgend County Borough Council secured a grant worth just over £5 million, which will see Active Travel improvements made at various locations throughout the county borough.

The crossings in North Cornelly have been fitted in School Terrace and cost approximately £220,000.

These improvements will make the route significantly safer for both pedestrians and cyclists and will link the nearby residential area to the southeast of North Cornelly as well as providing a safe link to bus stops on either side of the road.

A feasibility study is now underway for phase two of the project in North Cornelly.

Active Travel work is also ongoing in Porthcawl to create 250 dropped kerb crossings.

The works are being undertaken on a street-by-street basis in residential areas near the seafront and are expected to be complete in March 2023.

The £400,000 project will bring many benefits for local residents and will improve accessibility at junctions for wheelchair users, prams and cyclists.

Cllr John Spanswick, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “The Active Travel Scheme is already having a positive impact in the area and it’s really pleasing that crossings have been installed in appropriate areas to improve safety for residents.

“It’s very important that we have the right infrastructures in place as we want to make it as easy as possible for our residents to travel around the whole of Bridgend County Borough in a way that’s better for the planet.”
