A hands on experience at Greenmeadows Community Farm

Written by Laura Lewis

Greenmeadows Community Farm in Newport is a much-loved destination that offers visitors a chance to experience the charm of rural life in a welcoming and accessible setting. Nestled on the outskirts of the city, the farm provides a peaceful escape from busy urban surroundings while remaining easy to reach for families, schools, and tourists alike. Its friendly atmosphere and hands-on approach make it especially popular with children, who can interact closely with a wide variety of animals.

The farm is home to many traditional and rare breeds, including cows, pigs, sheep, goats, and poultry. Visitors are encouraged to feed and pet the animals, creating memorable, educational experiences that foster a deeper appreciation for farming and animal care. Regular activities such as bottle-feeding lambs or collecting eggs give guests a genuine taste of daily farm life. Staff members are knowledgeable and approachable, always ready to share insights about the animals and the workings of the farm.

In addition to its animal encounters, Greenmeadows Community Farm offers a range of seasonal events and activities throughout the year. From springtime celebrations with newborn animals to autumn harvest events and festive winter experiences, there is always something new to enjoy. These events often include tractor rides, craft sessions, and opportunities to learn traditional skills, adding to the farm’s strong community feel.

The site also features a café serving homemade meals and refreshments, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy locally inspired food. Outdoor play areas provide space for children to burn off energy, while picnic spots make it easy for families to spend a full day on the farm. The overall layout is designed to be accessible, ensuring that people of all ages and abilities can comfortably explore and participate.

We visited on March 21st 2026 and had a guided tour, the farmers Jack and Ryan were very knowledgeable and patient with us all, including many small children eager to learn. From feeding the sheep, cuddling the lambs, playing with the piglets and holding the cutest little chicks- my children had the best time! It is amazing how the place is so beautiful, a working farm and an establishment that caters to all.

We discovered that a child feeding animals is a joyful and gentle experience. With small hands offering food, the child learns kindness and care for animals. The sheep gather eagerly, nibbling softly, the pigs more eager and eating off the floor or the troughs the children put the food in. These simple moments builds confidence, creates happy memories, and helps the child understand nature, responsibility, and the importance of treating animals with respect. My four year old experienced a hands on experience, Ryan explained which food was for which animal, which was  learning opportunity for the children involved, allowing the children to feel the foods available and explaining the differing textures and ingredients for each animal we fed.

Education is a key part of the farm’s mission and explained very well throughout the whole experience we had, no question was left unanswered from any of the children in our group. School visits and group bookings are welcomed, with structured sessions that align with learning objectives and promote understanding of agriculture, sustainability, and the environment. By connecting people with the origins of their food and the importance of responsible farming, the farm plays a valuable role in raising awareness and encouraging more sustainable lifestyles.

The restaurant serves a wide variety of meals, fresh pizza was the children’s choice that day, a roast beef was mine – which the little one promptly declared hers! It was absolutely delicious. We also had a Marios ice-cream at an affordable price, to sit and rest waiting for the children to recharge to see more of this wonderful working farm, there are multiple areas to be able to sit and rest, which as we found out, was a lifesaver or rather a leg saver.

With an inside play area and an outdoor park there is a variety of places children can play alongside seeing and feeding the animals. The  wooded playground equipment offers a natural, durable, and inviting play environment for children. Its sturdy design encourages climbing, balancing, and imaginative play, helping develop physical strength and coordination. The warm, organic look blends well with both indoor and outdoor settings, creating a welcoming space where children can explore safely, socialize, and enjoy active play in a more traditional setting.

We found that accessibility on the farm ensures that everyone, including people with disabilities, can enjoy the experience. Features like level pathways, ramps, accessible toilets, and clear signage make movement easier. Friendly staff and inclusive activities help all visitors participate, creating a welcoming environment where people of all abilities can connect with animals and nature.

Greenmeadows Community Farm stands out not just as a visitor attraction, but as a place that brings people together. Its combination of education, entertainment, and community spirit makes it a treasured asset to Newport, offering enriching experiences that leave lasting impressions on all who visit. We can vouch for Greenmeadows as a wonderful day out, and a must see attraction for South Wales and will 100% be returning in the summer.
