Bridgend County Borough Council has contacted Zimmer Biomet to urge managers to rethink their plans for closing down the plant, and to work with the local authority and its partners to find an alternative solution.
The Leader, Cllr Huw David said: “I have written to Zimmer Biomet to urge them to reconsider and commit towards the development and consideration of alternative options alongside Unite the Union, Welsh Government, UK Government and the council.
“The impact of their decision will be felt not only by the 540-strong workforce, but upon businesses within the supply chain and others who have come to depend upon trade associated with Zimmer Biomet and its staff.
“I also want businesses to recognise that Bridgend County Borough remains an excellent place to invest in. Our dedicated team can deliver a range of funding and start-up support, and the Bridgend Business Forum offers strong networking opportunities.
“As we are situated mid-way between Cardiff and Swansea and have a highly skilled local workforce on hand, the area enjoys excellent communication links with easy access to three junctions of the M4, the Swansea-to-London high-speed rail network and Cardiff International Airport.
“Despite the decision by Zimmer Biomet, we remain firmly focused upon generating future growth and prosperity, and I invite all businesses to come and see what the area has to offer.”
