Self-defence training for women as part of Safer Streets fund
Self-defence training for women will be available every Tuesday and Thursday in February and March.
The sessions are funded by the Safer Streets initiative and will take place at Bridgend Life Centre between 6pm and 8pm. The classes are suitable for all females aged 16 and over.
The Safer Streets project is a partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council, the Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales and South Wales Police. One of the key aims of the project is to make sure that all females feel as safe as possible.
The sessions will be taken by a self-defence expert and aim to provide guidance and tools to face threats with confidence by offering training in situational awareness, conflict de-escalation and basic self-defence techniques.
It will raise awareness of inappropriate behaviours by others and provide simple tactics to keep yourself, friends, and colleagues safe.
Places are limited so it’s advised that anyone interested reserves a place online.
South Cornelly residents invited to learn more about Low Carbon Communities project
The next phase of the Low Carbon Communities project in South Cornelly will see a feasibility study test the use of locally produced hydrogen which is seen as a viable alternative to non-renewable gas for heating our homes.
The plan is to inject hydrogen into the existing natural gas network at a 20% blend as this will not cause any disruption to local residents.
At this stage, there will not be any home surveys or gas safe checks required and no physical works will be completed.
Drop-in sessions will be held at the Grove Golf Club at the following times:
- 19 January- 4pm-8pm
- 20 January- 4pm-8pm
The project is being organised in partnership with Welsh Government, Challoch Energy and Nuvision Energy (Wales).

Clean-up underway as county borough recovers from torrential rainfall
Council staff have been working around the clock to support residents and businesses, keep roads open, distribute sandbags, and ensure that drains and gulleys remain clear.
The sheer amount of rainfall meant that drainage systems were overwhelmed in many areas, particularly in Ogmore Vale. After water entered premises at Cemetery Road and Alma Terrace, council crews worked alongside the South Wales Fire And Rescue Service to pump out drainage chambers and divert water away from properties using sand bags.
A culvert to the rear of Bethania Row was also overwhelmed by rainwater after becoming blocked by debris which had washed downstream, but efforts to access it were hindered due to parked cars. After officers from South Wales Police helped alert householders and ensured that the cars were removed, council workers were able to clear the blockage, but not before some flooding unfortunately occurred at the nearby Welfare Hall.
Also, several units at Penllwyngwent Industrial Estate also experienced flooding due to water flowing off land at the rear of the premises. Sandbags were deployed to help divert the water, and investigations will take place to see if any further action is required at the site.
New school attendance campaign officially launched
Bridgend County Borough Council has officially launched a campaign to highlight the importance of school attendance.
Backed by schools across the county borough, the campaign highlights the importance for children to attend school and return to the classroom following the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is vitally important that children across Bridgend County Borough attend school whenever possible. For example, with an attendance rate of 90 per cent during one school year, a pupil could miss over 100 lessons.
Parents and carers of school pupils are not permitted to withdraw pupils from school during term time and any request for leave must be approved by headteachers prior to the absence.
For more information on the campaign, you can visit the school attendance webpage on the council’s website.
