Children Blown Away by Red Dragon Workshop

Pupils from Mount Stuart Primary School visited the Red Dragon Centre to participate in a workshop surrounding the A Dog’s Trail Snoopy sculpture that has been housed there for the last eight weeks.

Dogs Trusts’ A Dog’s Trail is a public art trail which sees intricately designed Snoopy sculptures placed across the city for the public to find. The Red Dragon Centre has been home to Snoop Draig, a Snoopy designed by local artist Sophie Galliers.

Sophie visited the Centre to speak to pupils from years one and six classes from Mount Stuart Primary School, telling them how her inspiration for Snoop Draig was the national red dragon emblem of Wales, portraying Welsh pride and power.

The pupils completed a fun artistic activity supported by Sophie and were gifted a batch of The Red Dragon Centre’s Birthday Bloom sunflower seeds to grow and look after on school grounds. The seeds were also gifted by the Centre to any visitors who unlocked Snoop Draig via the Dog’s Trail app.

Sophie said: “It was fab to meet the pupils for a workshop, especially as an ex-teacher of 20 years I do miss working with children and in groups, so joining in with them was great fun. They were all so positive about the work and enthusiastic about Snoop Draig which was lovely to see; it was great to see the children engaging in art, as that’s what the trail is all about.”

Emma Constantinou, Marketing and Tenant Liaison Manager at The Red Dragon Centre, said: “Having Sophie visit the Centre and speak to the pupils of local school Mount Stuart Primary was great, as the kids were able to enjoy Snoop Draig and ask lots of questions about the creative process, before giving it a go themselves. It was lovely to see them so engaged with the art.”

Nigel Pritchard, teacher at Mount Stuart Primary School, said: “We can’t thank The Red Dragon Centre enough for organising this activity and hosting us for the afternoon. The children had a great time and learnt so much, and they all left feeling very creative and excited about trying their hand at painting. Another big thank you to Sophie who was great in how she spoke to the children, engaging them in a fab workshop and helping them find their inner artists!”
