The Go.Compare Road to Principality tournament for 2026 has come to an end following a finals programme that saw more than a thousand players take to two of Welsh rugby’s most iconic stages – the Principality Stadium and Rodney Parade.
In Cardiff, 736 players took part in finals action at the Principality Stadium, across 32 finalist teams and at Rodney Parade, a further 32 teams competed in the finals, with 600 players taking part.
Across the whole tournament:
-
17,400 adults and 3,900 youth players took part
-
Players aged 16 to 61 took part
-
2,239 women and girls took part
-
More than 250 teams played
With clubs represented from every corner of Wales, the Road to Principality continues to prove that community sport is thriving and that providing a clear, well-run pathway from local fixtures to a national finals stage has a powerful impact on participation, pride and progression.
The finals delivered drama and high-scoring moments across the divisions, including Brecon Athletic’s eight-try 49–5 Division 5 Cup win over Bargoed Warriors, and Pontyclun’s 27–21 victory against Llangadog in the Division 4 Cup final. New Dock Stars edged Tumble 32–29 in the Division 3 Cup Final, with player of the match Adam Gealy contributing 17 points. Highlights in the women’s finals included Llandaff North’s 29–14 Women’s Cup win over Bonymaen and Seven Sisters retaining the Women’s Plate with a 45–12 victory.
These numbers reflect the growing value of structured tournaments in keeping grassroots sport thriving, giving players meaningful fixtures, building confidence, and creating memorable experiences that stretch beyond the final whistle.
Geraint John, Community Director at Welsh Rugby Union said: “Grassroots sport depends on opportunities that are accessible, aspirational and well-organised and the Go.Compare Road to Principality provides exactly that. For players and clubs, it offers more than a single cup run. It creates a structured route to meaningful fixtures, fosters community pride, supports volunteer networks and gives teams of all abilities a platform to compete.”
Josh Tumbridge, Head of Brand at Go.Compare said: “We’re proud to support a tournament that celebrates participation from every corner of Wales. Road to Principality is a brilliant example of what makes grassroots sport in Wales so special, bringing communities together and giving players of all ages the chance to be part of something bigger.”
