Local ALN students showcase skills

This week attendees of a training workshop, for Teachers and Teaching Assistants from south Wales, will see local ALN students demonstrate their communication and independence by serving refreshments.

The Western Learning Federation Ty Gwyn School is hosting the Picture Exchange Communication System® (PECS®) training event on 22 & 23 May 2024. The workshop will equip delegates with invaluable skills to enhance the communication of their students with special educational needs.

PECS is a widely acclaimed communication system designed to aid individuals with communication challenges, empowering them to express themselves using pictures. This comprehensive workshop will delve into the implementation of PECS strategies, offering practical insights and techniques for effective integration into educational settings.

The highlight of the event is the participation of students from Ty Gwyn School, who will be showcasing their skills by serving refreshments to the delegates. As part of their curriculum these students, who have special educational needs, have been mastering PECS and acquiring essential life skills through the application of the Pyramid Approach to Education®, giving them independence and confidence.

Louise Maggs, Clinical Director of Pyramid Educational Consultants, will lead the training, bringing her wealth of expertise and experience to guide attendees through the intricacies of PECS implementation. Speaking about the workshop, she remarked, “Effective communication lies at the heart of education. I am delighted to deliver this workshop equipping educators so that they can teach their students functional communication skills and independence through PECS.”

Rachel Faulkner, Deputy Executive Head Teacher of WLF, shared her insights on the significance of the event, remarking, “Western Learning Federation Ty Gwyn School is committed to providing inclusive learning environments where every voice is heard, and the unique needs of every student are met. This workshop exemplifies our dedication to empowering both educators and learners, ensuring that every individual thrives.”

The PECS training workshop at Western Learning Federation Ty Gwyn School represents a significant milestone in advancing inclusive education practices within Cardiff and beyond. Educators and TAs attending this workshop are poised to make a profound impact on the lives of students with special educational needs, by teaching them communication skills essential for lifelong success.
