Restaurant Review: An Early Valentine’s Evening to Remember at Bill’s Cardiff Central

If ever there was a setting made for romance in the heart of the city, Bill’s Cardiff Central delivered it in style for Valentine’s Day. Just a short stroll from St. David’s car park yet tucked away enough to feel intimate, the restaurant struck that perfect balance between lively atmosphere and cosy corners for two – even though we came early on 12th January to avoid the business that accompanies a busy Valentine’s evening!

From the moment we arrived, there was a warmth that went beyond the candlelight. The team were attentive without hovering, genuinely enthusiastic, and clearly proud of the special menu they were serving. It felt relaxed, welcoming and unpretentious — exactly what you want for a celebration that should be about enjoying each other’s company.

Our welcome from was warm and friendly, and the setting could not have been better.  We were showed to the perfect table, a cosy, comfortable booth for two, with absolutely the right balance of attentive yet unhurried service from the lovely Evie.  As with the Cardiff Bay branch, the food is fabulous but the biggest stars at Bill’s are the staff, for whom nothing is too much trouble and who clearly care about delivering a high quality experience for their diners.

Atmosphere That Hits the Right Note

Valentine’s dining can sometimes feel forced or overly formal, but we loved our visit here. Bill’s managed to create a celebratory feel without tipping into cliché, and offered the same standards of friendly service we have come to expect from this lovely chain. Soft lighting, subtle décor touches and the gentle hum of happy diners made it feel like the place to be — yet it never felt crowded or rushed.

There was a genuine buzz in the room: a mix of couples clinking glasses, sharing plates, lingering over dessert, friends quietly enjoying food, drink and the ambience and families are also welcome, although this branch was quieter and a little more intimate than the Cardiff Bay venue, which we also absolutely love.

We also liked this appetiser which delivered the perfect warm up while our food was prepared.

A Menu Made for Sharing

The Valentine’s set menu struck just the right tone — it felt like a treat, but was accessible and all the flavours complemented each other.

To start, we chose the Smooth Chicken Liver Pâté and Bill’s Chicken & Sesame Dumplings — and both were exactly what you want from a romantic night out.  We were also pleasantly surprised to find a non-alcoholic cocktail as part of the choices on offer, given that neither of us drink very often, it made for a refreshing from change from our regular diet soda!

The pâté was silky and rich without being overpowering, with just the right amount of sweetness coming through from the tomato chutney. The grilled flatbread was warm and lightly crisped, perfect for scooping up every last bit, and the peashoots added a fresh touch that stopped it feeling too heavy.

The dumplings were a completely different vibe — crispy on the outside, juicy in the middle and packed with flavour. They had that satisfying crunch when you bit into them, and Bill’s spicy chutney gave just enough heat to keep things interesting without blowing your head off.

Two very different starters, but both spot on — perfect to share (which we always do!) and a great way to kick off the evening.

A wide choice of Mains, but all delicious and cooked to perfection

There were five choices of main dishes with enough variety to please even the fussiest diner.

We opted for the Melt-in-Your-Mouth Honey Mustard Chicken and the perfectly cooked Sea Bass with Prosecco Hollandaise — and both felt like proper comfort food with a bit of a special twist.

The Honey Mustard Chicken was stunning and I could have eaten the sauce all day long, especially with the generous bed of creamy chive mash.  The chicken was tender and full of flavour from the rosemary and garlic marinade, with that lovely slight char from the grill.   The sauce had just the right balance — a touch of sweetness, a gentle tang, and rich without being overwhelming, meanwhile the perfectly cooked tenderstem broccoli added a bit of bite and freshness to round it all off.  Portions were very generous and I could not manage all of mine – but no problem, my husband ALWAYS finishes what I don’t and was just as enthusiastic about my food as his own!

The Sea Bass felt a little lighter but still indulgent. The skin was crisp, the fish flaky and cooked perfectly. Again, the chive mash was smooth and comforting, but the real standout was the Prosecco hollandaise. It had that classic buttery richness you expect, but with a subtle lift that kept it from feeling too heavy. Paired with the tenderstem broccoli, it was a well-balanced plate that felt elegant and looked visually stunning without being overcomplicated.

Delicious Dessert Options

In addition to the Valentine’s Menu, there were a number of delicious sounding desserts which, on glancing at the tables around us, would deliver the perfect ending to a fabulous meal experience.  However, given that I am dieting and my husband had already taken many of the calories from my starter and main, we were both a little too full to manage a dessert, which was a shame as we saw them served on other tables!

Here’s what we saw and observed – and I will almost certainly try these when I am at target because the options sounded very lovely!

With a choice of Smitten Toffee Pudding — soft, sticky sponge with plenty of sweetness, lifted by vanilla ice cream and that extra drizzle of Biscoff® sauce, or a Rich Chocolate Brownie, warm sauce poured over the top and melting into the vanilla ice cream — messy in the best possible way. Definitely one for chocolate lovers.

For those who fancy a lighter option, the Passion Fruit & Berry Mess offers a great choice. Fresh fruit folded through whipped cream and crushed meringue delivers a nice balance of sweetness and sharpness, while the Black Cherry & Almond Cheesecake is a Bill’s classic — creamy, smooth and not overly sweet, with the cherry compote adding a fruity hit and the toasted almonds giving a bit of texture.

Finally, it is Valentine’s Day so indulgence is allowed!  If that’s what you want at the end of the meal. the Chocolate & Salted Caramel Tart offers a rich and decadent option, with that sweet-salty combination that always works. The coconut ice cream on the side adds something a little different and cuts through the richness nicely.

Exceptional Value for a Special Night

The one thing we always find at Bill’s is generous portions at reasonable prices, and in a city where Valentine’s menus can quickly become eye-wateringly expensive, Bill’s Cardiff Central offered a premium experience without the premium price tag. The quality of ingredients, portion sizes and level of service easily rivalled higher-end venues – and we’d definitely visit again (in fact, we are already planning our next visit!)

For anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion in Cardiff without the stress of fine-dining formality, Bill’s makes a superb choice.

The Verdict

Bill’s Cardiff Central proved that a romantic meal doesn’t need to be overcomplicated to be memorable. Thoughtful dishes, warm service and a relaxed yet polished setting made this Valentine’s menu one of the most enjoyable we’ve experienced in the city.

If this is the standard they’re setting for seasonal menus, we’ll be first in line next year.
