For many, the end of summer signals a return to routine, but for retirees, it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter filled with adventure and exploration.
A recent survey by Legal & General, involving over 2,000 UK adults aged 55 and above, offers a fascinating glimpse into the travel dreams and habits of retirees across the UK, especially those in Cardiff. Whether it’s travelling with loved ones, exploring far-off lands, or planning their trips down to the last penny, Cardiff retirees are proving that age is no barrier to satisfying their wanderlust.
Who Are They Travelling With?
For most Cardiff retirees, travel is a shared experience. According to the survey, a substantial 68% of respondents from Cardiff expressed their desire to travel with their partner, prioritising companionship on their journeys. Friends are the next preferred travel companions for 37%, reflecting the importance of social connections during this phase of life. Interestingly, only 12% are eager to travel with their children, and even fewer, 9%, with their grandchildren.
A Mixed Bag of Confidence
Cardiff retirees appear to be confident when it comes to travelling in general, with 78% expressing a solid belief in their ability to jet off during retirement. However, when it comes to the idea of solo travel, this confidence dips significantly, with only 40% saying they would feel comfortable embarking on a solo journey.
Financial Preparation – Or Lack Thereof?
One thing is clear: most retirees in Cardiff are thinking about how to fund their post-work travels, but not all are planning thoroughly. A majority, 63%, have set aside money specifically for retirement trips, ensuring their adventures won’t be cut short by financial constraints. However, 17% admitted they did not plan to financially prepare at all, choosing instead to embrace a more spontaneous approach to retirement travel.
For those who do plan ahead, 19% are methodical in their approach, creating detailed itineraries and using them to calculate travel costs. Despite these efforts, financial missteps can happen, as 9% confessed to running out of money during their travels.
Dream Destinations
When it comes to where Cardiff’s retirees want to go, Europe dominates the list. Italy is the top destination by 53% of respondents. Close behind is Spain (47%), Portugal (35%), France (35%) and Greece (30%).
What Matters Most?
Travelling in retirement isn’t just about ticking places off a bucket list – it’s about making the most of the experience. For Cardiff retirees, the overall cost of a trip (62%) is the top priority, indicating that they are budget-conscious travellers. Following closely behind is the desire to see specific sights (49%), showing that these travellers are keen to immerse themselves in cultural and historical landmarks.
Other factors that influence their travel decisions include the time of year (48%) and the promise of warm, sunny weather (47%), both of which suggest that Cardiff retirees are looking for comfort and relaxation. Affordable accommodation (47%) also ranks high, underscoring the importance of value-for-money in ensuring a stress-free trip.
The Different Types of Retiree Travelers
Interestingly, Cardiff’s retirees can be grouped into three distinct travel personas. The largest group (29%) describes themselves as “planners” – these individuals book their flights, accommodation, and events well in advance, ensuring every detail is accounted for. Another 19% fall into the “budgeter” category, masters at hunting down deals and making the most of their travel funds.
However, not all retirees are keen to stick to a rigid plan. A relaxed 16% see themselves as “easy-going” travellers, preferring to take things as they come. These spontaneous retirees might not have an itinerary, but they trust in the magic of the moment to guide their adventures.
Retirement Travel: A New Kind of Freedom
Legal & General’s survey paints a vivid picture of Cardiff’s retirees – financially savvy, adventurous, and eager to explore the world, often with their partners by their side. Whether meticulously planning each journey or embracing the unexpected, they are proving that retirement is not about slowing down but making special memories to last a lifetime.
