Tributes paid to former mayor Mari Jones

The Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council has paid tribute to Mari Jones, a former mayor and independent councillor who passed away recently aged 92.

Her funeral service took place earlier today at St Ceitho’s Church in Llangeitho, Tregaron.

The Leader, Cllr Huw David said: “I was greatly saddened to learn that Llangynwyd resident Mari Jones recently passed away. As the former independent councillor for that area and as mayor of Bridgend County Borough, Mari devoted herself to many years of public service.

“She served as a member of the council’s overview and scrutiny committees for both Education, Leisure and Community Services, and Social Services and Housing, was a vice chair of Planning and Development, and a member of the Licensing Committee.

“Mari was dedicated to her local community of Llangynwyd. She was instrumental in successful efforts to invest in and develop Llangynwyd Village Hall, and proud to be a governor of both Cwmfelin and Llangynwyd primary schools. Her contribution and impact was county wide, and included serving as a board member for Valleys to Coast Housing and Maesteg Town Hall, and as vice-chair of the Glamorgan Women’s Institute arts and leisure committee.

“As a passionate champion of the Welsh language, Mari was the first Bridgend County Borough mayor to make her oath in both Welsh and English. Her devotion and warm, caring personality meant that she was highly respected and liked across the chamber.

“I remember Mari as a very committed public servant, and as someone who was wholly dedicated towards her role as an elected member and in helping improve her local community. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.”
