Recent statistics have revealed a downward trend of road collisions in South Wales, with the figures presented reflecting a national improvement in the safety of Welsh roadways. According to police statistics published by Road Safety Wales, road traffic collisions fell by nearly a quarter between 2019 and 2022.
The statistics were naturally somewhat impacted by the incidence of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, which had strong short- and medium-term consequences for driving habits across the country. With travel limited to emergency trips and key workers, accident rates dropped naturally – but even as relative normalcy began to return, accident statistics remained low. What are some of the other factors responsible for these shifts in statistics for the south of Wales?
Implementation of Road Safety Measures
One of the evergreen factors that has been positively impacting traffic and road safety in the UK relates to the road infrastructure itself. Road safety measures are constantly iterated and improved upon, with council-by-council investment improving aspects of the driving experience alongside national infrastructural shifts.
While signage improvements, traffic calming measures and traffic light algorithms have seen constant and consistent improvement in recent years, Wales’ transport strategy for the past few years has defined some major aspects of their measured improvements to road safety. Since 2022, the Welsh government have scrapped larger new road projects to invest in existing infrastructure and find more carbon-positive alternatives.
Enhanced Vehicle Safety Standards
Another key aspect to the improvement in road safety involves the improvement in safety standards for vehicles. Newer vehicles feature more robust and efficient safety systems, from intelligent traction technology to enhanced crumple zone design and airbag technology. The proliferation of electric vehicles has contributed to road safety in this way too; the above features are all standard in modern EVs, but they also benefit from being simpler machines with less points of failure. EV-specific features like regenerative braking also make them far simpler and safer to operate, reducing stopping distance and improving control in handling.
Not only do newer vehicles reduce the risk of an accident, but they can also improve outcomes for victims of accidents. Sensor and integrated camera data can be used to form strong cases when victims of an accident take their injury to civil court.

“For most of us, the times we use a solicitor are usually few and far between. Maybe to help with property, making a will, other family affairs or business-related things.
No surprise then that people can feel a little daunted by the uncertainties of an injury compensation claim at a time they’re already feeling low – and perhaps in a lot of pain. A friendly ear with good, clear advice in plain English about their accident and no win no fee claims really puts our customers at ease.
It’s our job is to give each customer the knowledge and space to make the decision that’s right for them.”

Public Awareness Campaigns
The final piece of the puzzle for improvements to road safety in Wales is that of public service messaging. Awareness campaigns are crucial to maintaining conscientious road users, whether drivers, cyclists or pedestrians. Recent changes to the Highway Code were designed to make road use safer for more vulnerable road users and telegraphed well via media outlets.
