Police Investigation Leads to Closure of Two Cardiff Schools

Two secondary schools in Cardiff have been forced to close today (Monday March 16) as a precaution following a report made to police the previous evening.

At around 8.30pm yesterday (Sunday, March 15) the force have confirmed in a statement this afternoon that officers received a live chat making threats to harm people at Llanishen High School and Eastern High School.  The information was that an individual had intention to attend the schools in possession of weapons.

After discussions between police and Cardiff Council, South Wales Police confirmed that both schools would remain shut while officers carry out enquiries into the incident.  Authorities have emphasised that the move was made purely as a safety measure.

In a statement, Superintendent Mark Kavanagh said the closures followed the report received on Sunday evening and were intended to ensure there was no risk to pupils or staff while investigations continue.

“We have come to the decision, with support from Cardiff Council, to keep these schools closed on Monday in order to avoid risk, following a report which was made to police on Sunday evening,” he said.

“This report is currently under investigation. This decision was not taken lightly but was made with the safety of pupils, staff and the wider school communities in mind.”

Commenting,  Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, Natasha Asghar MS said:

“This is a deeply concerning situation for parents, pupils and staff, and I hope the police can carry out a swift investigation to avoid further disruption to families.

“Teachers and pupils must feel safe in school, and incidents like this raise serious concerns about safety.

At this stage, we understand that the information is being actively investigated to assess the credibility and determine the origin of the threat.

At this time, we understand that there is no evidence or report of any persons physically attending either school posing a threat and an increased policing presence is likely to be seen in the area while the investigation and searches continue and police and council enquiries remain ongoing.

Authorities have not yet confirmed when the schools will reopen.
